Twisted pair - two isolated (usually copper) conductor twisted one about another. Twisted pair is used to transmit electrical signals. Twisting the wires reduces the influence of external electromagnetic interference. There are shielded and unshielded twisted pairs.
Shielded twisted pair - twisted pair, surrounded by a grounded metal foil, which serves as a screen and provides protection from electromagnetic interference.
Unshielded twisted pair - twisted pair, with no metal screen. There are five categories of unshielded twisted pairs.
The first and second categories are used at low frequencies.
The third and fourth - at frequencies of 16 and 20 MHz respectively.
The fifth category provides data transmission at 100 MHz.
